Do you still have a Nintendo 3DS or 3DS XL at home?
Then you should know that Nintendo no longer performs service or repairs on the old game consoles.
- Applies to all variants of old 3DS and 3DS XL
- The new variants of the 3DS and 3DS XL are NOT covered
- No more repairs or service after March 31st
- The handheld consoles stopped being manufactured in 2020
The original version of the Nintendo 3DS was launched in the Japanese market on February 11. The slightly sharper and larger 3DS XL model, also called “LL” in Japan, was introduced in July 2012.
Both officially stopped being manufactured as early as September last year, but it has still been possible to have existing handheld consoles repaired at the manufacturer’s service center.

Nintendo now announces that service and repairs will no longer be possible after March 31, 2021. This applies to all color combinations of 3DS (CTR-001) and 3DS XL (SPR-001).
Note that this does NOT apply to New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS or 2DS XL – these models can still be submitted for service or repair.
Although the 3DS / 2DS series may not be the best device for watching movies and series, it has actually been possible. Netflix has an app on the game consoles, though it closes on 30 June. So you have a short window to try the app if you want to experience pixel movies on the small screens.
