A group of researchers from Harvard University will test fly a balloon from Kiruna in Lapland to see if it can transport equipment for an experiment on radiation-reflecting particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. However, environmental organizations are strongly critical and believe that such a solar experiment can be the first step towards a technology that can be extremely difficult to handle.
Organizations such as Greenpeace and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation suspect that the experiment could lead to the use of solar energy technology to “cool down” the earth – something the organizations believe is very dangerous, can damage the ozone layer and destroy nature’s ecosystems, writes The Guardian.
