Facebook announces that support for 120Hz for the VR headset Oculus Quest 2 will not be released during the first quarter of the year as planned. Instead, the launch is postponed to the future and only sometime during the second quarter can we hope that the support is released.
There is no information on why the support will not be released as planned in March. But it’s probably because Facebook wants to solve difficulties and bugs that make it so before the launch.
Reading tips:
The support for 120Hz is highly anticipated as it provides a much softer and more comfortable image than the default setting in Quest 2. By default, 72Hz is used while 90Hz is available as an option in some games. The higher setting gives a softer image, but also negatively affects battery life.
When the support for 120Hz is released, not all games can use the special mode. Graphics-intensive game titles continue to be locked to 72Hz or 90Hz, while less graphics-heavy games get the chance to push up the display frequency to 120Hz.
Only a few existing games will be tweaked for 120 [Hz], but some new titles will consider it an option in their design phase.
John Carmack
In fact, renowned game developer John Carmack says in a statement that only a few existing game titles will support 120Hz in the future. It is probably a little better for new games that can be developed with the high frame rate in mind and thus have support from the start.
Considering that the vast majority of all games for Quest 2 do not even support 90Hz today, we do not have high hopes that 120Hz will pick up speed.
Not least because the VR headset is not designed to run at the highest frame rate from the beginning either.
It will be exciting to see what 120Hz can do for the VR experience. The question now is just what the interest looks like among the game developers. Flip or flop, what do you think?
