Test: Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 + 5G

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 + 5G offers a magically good screen but slightly undersized hardware. And it is important that you find it on sale to be completely satisfied.

Just like with their mobiles, Samsung has a long experience of tablets in different price ranges and sizes. This time we have taken a closer look at the flagship model Galaxy Tab S7 + 5G which is a large, stylish model that delivers both rose and some rice.

The screen with everything

We start by looking at the external features of the device. This is a model that measures 185 x 285 x 5.7 millimeters and weighs 575 grams. Unlike Samsung’s softer shaped mobiles, the Tab S7 comes with rounded corners but with completely flat sides, which is a bit reminiscent of previous, and also the latest edition of Iphone. On the upper long side, we find both the power button and the volume control. But there is also room for a combo slot that holds an mSD card of up to a terabyte of storage and a SIM card with support for 5G.

On both short sides we find four speakers developed by AKG and which support Dolby Atmos. Here we really see what two extra speakers can do if we compare with different smart phones. The sound becomes immersive with a good 3D balancing where we can hear sounds in movies and games move in both distance and from side to side in a completely new way. The sound is also good enough to appreciate music with the S7 as the only playback device.

We then move on to the screen which is really, really good. The plate uses a 12.4-inch Super Amoled screen that works with a resolution of 2,800 x 1,752 pixels, which gives 266 pixels per inch. The device uses the NTSC color spectrum and has an adjustable refresh rate of up to 120 hertz, which gives us a magically compliant handling both when browsing images or surfing the web. With support for HDR10 +, we also get a really good dynamic color range where colors light up in a clear but natural way, which we especially appreciate when we work with images or film.

New pencil with low lag

We do the latter with advantage together with the unit’s included active pen. This has been completely redone since the previous model and we get a solution here which we partly charge by magnetically attaching the pen to the intended marking on the back. The pen offers an extremely low latency with an immediate response and a high precision that is perfect when we sketch or paint on the plate. For this we can also use the pen to perform several commands via gestures and the pen’s integrated button.

Another wonderful feature when it comes to the pen is how well it works in different apps where we can easily make notes on otherwise locked files or select text in both documents and spreadsheets. Samsung has also included several smart and easy-to-use apps that have been developed just for use with the pen.

With the desire for more

We continue with the unit’s hardware equipment. This has a base in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 Plus, which is a big step up from the previous top model Tab S6. The processor has eight cores distributed over different frequencies: 3.09 gigahertz, 2.4 gigahertz and 1.8 gigahertz. For this we get a slightly small storage of 128 gigabytes, which still works as we still get support for mSD cards. What’s a little worse is that the model only comes with six gigabytes of RAM, which is enough for more standardized use. But when we start working more actively with programs like Clip Studio Paint at the same time as we roll Spotify in the background and want to multitask with some digital conference software or various social media, it happens all too often that the album has to “think” before the resources are released, which is a bit annoying, and considering that the model (at launch) costs around SEK 13,500, we probably think we should get at least eight gigabytes of RAM.

On the inside, there is also a 10,090 milliampere powerful battery, which even with a relatively powerful load lasts for just over ten hours, which is almost 14 hours of video watching. Once the battery is low, the device supports fast charging of up to 45 watts.

The camera is a little disappointing

We then come to the camera where we find dual lenses / sensors on the back of the unit: a five megapixel ultra-wide angle with f / 2.2 and a thirteen megapixel wide angle with f / 2.0. The camera has support for night mode and automatic scene optimization, but despite the fact that the camera part of the plate is lifted from the previous model, it is still a big step up to the mobile’s solutions. Of course, there is also a front camera of eight megapixels that also supports face login and here we must say that Samsung has done a better job. Not because this is better than the rear lenses, but if we compare with alternative solutions, we get a really good solution for all forms of digital video meetings.
