The latest version of Google Chrome crashes for users on Windows 10. Google is aware of this issue and is working on a solution.
Several users report that Chrome 90 – the latest version of the browser – crashes in Windows 10. Something that does not happen on macOS or Linux with the same version.
Chrome crashes without a clear pattern
According to sufferers, Chrome seems to crash for no apparent reason. There is no clear reason or pattern that indicates why the crashes occur.
However, some users say that Chrome seems to crash when extensions are loaded, but this is not something that Google confirms.
Instead, Google believes that it is the directory where user data is stored that is the reason for the crashes.
The crash bug is fixed in the next Chrome version
According to Google, the bug that caused the crashes has been identified and resolved in the next version of Chrome.
Anyone who installs the latest pre-release version of Chrome has already received a fix. Since this is a pre-release version, we do not recommend that you use it as it may contain more bugs.
The solutions you can try
There is a small notch you can try if you want to try to fix the crashes before Google releases the next version of Chrome. How to use:
- Close all instances of Google Chrome
- Open Windows Explorer
- Copy and paste the following into the address bar:
% LOCALAPPDATA% Google Chrome User Data - Copy the “Local State” file to another folder
- Delete the “Local State” file from the User Data folder
