For a more relaxed gaming experience, the ADX Race19 also reclines about 90 degrees. Some of the rest of the features are also on higher-end desk chairs, but that’s by no means a bad thing. These include the height and tilt adjustment as well as 360-degree rotation.

In addition to the Titan, the Epic is a large chair best suited to taller gamers. The seat base is wide and accommodating, while the gas lift helps raise it high enough to be comfortable if you’re shorter than 5ft7.

In addition to height adjustment, the Epic tilts back up to 140 degrees and has a lock to keep it positioned in place. The Black Edition’s 4D armrests have metal buttons and softer padding (though still firm). They are more customisable than most models. Additionally, they swivel in and out.

On the other hand, cheaper chairs use plastic, the Epic has a metal base and quiet 60mm castors. Unfortunately, the support is provided by a pillow that is likely too thick to be much use: we prefer the in-built, automotive-style adjustments in the Hero chair (and in Secretlab’s Titan).

If you’re looking for a gaming chair for use with a sim rig, this is a good option. It also has harness holes if you want to actually strap yourself in.

In many ways, gaming chairs are no different from office chairs. They have height adjustment, castors for easy movement, and armrests. However, like most gaming hardware, gaming chairs are far more stylish, typically inspired by the bucket seats in racing cars.

What is and isn’t stylish is up to your personal taste, but what should you look for in a gaming chair?

The ergonomics

Basic chairs usually just have height adjustments, but it’s worth investing in a chair with a reclining back and adjustable armrests, too. It’s important to have a chair that supports your spine properly and adjusts to fit your body, rather than forcing it into a bad posture.

It is difficult to find chairs that follow a ‘one size fits all’ philosophy, so you must make sure the seat height adjustment range will suit you properly. If possible, try to find a store where you can sit in the chair before purchasing.

A chair’s comfort level will depend on how well you fit into it. We tested the chairs here with tall and short people, and both large and slim builds, but we cannot guarantee that it will be as comfortable for you.

You won’t necessarily get a better ergonomic chair if you spend more, so good ergonomics don’t have to be expensive.

There are chairs that come with removable cushions for the lumbar (back support) or headrest. An ergonomic chair shouldn’t need these, but some individuals may need them for the best fit and comfort.

The longevity of life

What you get if you spend more is better quality materials and construction. Although the price of some chairs can make you wince, a good-quality chair should last for years, if not a decade or more.
