Proxies can be used for many purposes, from hiding your identity to providing faster service. The location of a proxy can dramatically affect the experience.

Due to the private nature of some proxies and the way they operate, determining their exact location may be challenging. The region of a proxy can be determined by a number of methods.

You can use this guide to find the best proxy server for your needs by knowing where a proxy is located.

Finding your proxy’s position without a technician

The location of a proxy doesn’t require a tech guru, wizard, or magician. Listed below are some steps to finding a proxy server’s exact location, some easier than others. Proxy locations can have a significant impact on everything from speed to security, so knowing where a proxy is located is essential for diagnostics or just ensuring your protection.

Additionally, if you are using a proxy server for data collection, a proxy server in the wrong region can invalidate your results. Discovering your proxy’s actual location is relatively painless and possible thanks to the internet.

As each proxy has different requirements and peculiarities, there is no single solution to pinpoint a proxy. Proxy servers can hide their location as the main feature, which requires a bit of extra detective work. One technique may not work, but there’s usually another.

You can learn more about detecting the location of your proxy by checking the list below.

Providers can help you with this

If you ask a proxy provider, you may learn its region easily. determine it. The proxy may not have any issues depending on what it is for asking for the proxy’s actual location. Providers of Unblockers and content delivery proxy services should let you know the region before purchase.

You may not be able to get very far asking the provider about other proxies, such as those for bypassing walled gardens. Government restrictions may necessitate a proxy’s privacy in order to protect the provider and its clients.

Even if you are uncertain whether asking the provider will be useful, go ahead and ask anyway. You won’t need to employ the more complicated solutions if you receive a positive response.

Trace IP addresses

You will need to investigate if the proxy provider is not forthcoming about the proxy’s location. If you’re looking for a China proxy, you want to make sure that’s what you’re getting, although navigating the particulars can be tricky.

Setting up a proxy requires specifying its IP address, so you could use that address to locate the proxy. IP tracing isn’t as complicated as popular movies make it out to be, but it does require a few steps.

IP tracing is not completely foolproof, as we should mention before we begin. Firewalls on some proxies block traces. In addition, repeated trace attempts may generate entries in the proxy’s security log. Proceed with caution if you don’t want to risk being noticed by the server administrators.

When you are on Windows 10, click the Start button and open the Command Prompt (PowerShell or Windows Terminal will also work.

Type the following in the command window:

Trace the proxy server here

In place of “your.proxy.server.here,” type your proxy server’s IP address and click ENTER *.

MacOS follows a similar procedure. At the prompt, type:

Trace the route your.proxy.server.here

Again, you would replace “your.proxy.server.here” with your proxy’s IP address, and press ENTER ⏎.

Results Analysis:

Your computer will generate several lines of text in the window as it traces the network path to your proxy server.

A column of asterisks (*) along the path indicates a network timeout. Security software and firewalls often block tracing by purposefully failing to respond to the request, causing numerous timeouts.

Upon completion of the trace, you will see a screen with a list of server names. You can think of these servers as the link between your computer and the proxy server.

The bottom three lines of the trace show the destination, first-tier, and second-tier ISPs for your proxy. Look for any region or country codes in these three server names.

Once you have reviewed the output, you should have a good idea of the proxy’s origin. If you do not see any server names, or the trace timed out, the proxy probably has security measures blocking the trace.

Geolocation services can help you find your location

If the previous two methods did not work, your last option is to use a geolocation service to discover the proxy’s location.on. There are a variety of geolocation tools available online; some are better than others, both free. and paid. It may take a few geolocators before you find one that works with your proxy.

Most Geolocation tools are simply graphical interfaces to the standard traceroute utility, so if traceroute didn’t work, the visual version won’t either. There are, however, geolocation tools that work differently from traceroute — they use databases or different protocols.

If you wish to remain anonymous, this approach may require some trial and error in some instances. Your ISP and any other agency involved in your internet service can see which geolocation services you use. You will typically be able to see your results displayed on a user-friendly map if you use geolocation services.

With a little moxie, you can find your proxy

Finding your proxy server’s location might take some effort and determination, but it’s not impossible. It is crucial that you know the details of your proxy, whether you need a specific region for faster speeds or to circumvent geo-fencing.

It is becoming increasingly important to have a fast, secure, and reliable proxy as more IoT devices and household appliances connect to the internet. Now that you know where your proxy is located, you can find it.
